Lobster Festival

Speaking of events I didn't hear about til the last minute, let's talk about Lobster Festival.

Few days ago I received a morning message from a friend, inviting me to Lobster Fest in San Pedro. What? Lobsters in Los Angeles? They don't pull them out of San Pedro do they? So I looked it up.

That... what?

So there will be lobsters there for eating? And...Exene Cervenka will be performing??? How is it that I've been going through life not hearing about this sooner?

Possible reasons: I don't listen to the radio for one thing. And work has been fairly busy. Plus I live in a haze and most things that I bother to read come from the east coast (much like lobsters). Just last week a friend in Maine sent me a newspaper clipping of local lobsterman jargon; y'know, like calling them "bugs" and the traps are called "pots." Somehow I doubt our lobster fest will be missing that kind of authenticity and pizazz.

So where are these L.A. bugs coming from? Maine. Well that's silly. And apparently there was a Lobster Fest earlier in the year in Long Beach and it was organized by the same people. The admission was inexplicably higher then too. And if you don't even like lobster to begin with, the food trucks will be out; many of the local faves; bring cash.

San Pedro all weekend. (And the non-Latino locals say it pee-drow, not pay-dro if we're still on this regional talk.) Fest started yesterday and continues through tomorrow Sunday. I'm going much later today. Performers include Exene and John Doe, Dengue Fever, Gram Rabbit, many others. Check the website for approximate set times and be sure to print a coupon to knock $2 off your $9 admission price. Again, bring cash.
