I was introduced to macarons a few years ago. A friend had a beautiful gift box of Paulette cookies. To be honest, I didn't care for them. Gave them another try today and was absolutely delighted. Better than Bottega Louie? Maybe. These were a slightly different style. A little poofier, chewier and more flavors to choose from. I thought the gold leaf on Louie's Earl Grey was a nicer touch, but Paulette's variety and decorations are tough to beat overall.
At $1.60 each, these are an expensive treat, but how often to do I buy such things aside from these past few days. A coworker came with me to the Little Tokyo Paulette shop and was horrified that my final cost was nearly $10 for 6 cookies. I was embarrassed, when he said that he probably didn't spend as much on all his cookies for the entire 2010 year. I believe it. Though I seem to remember he spent some cash on Girl Scout cookies last month. And so did I. Is this madness?

one of my flickr friends goes to paulette at least once a month and gets a huge box. the only times i've had them are when there are leftovers from the jack daniels restaurant at work and omg they melt in your mouth. which ones do you recommend?
Hi Xenia!
If you like bold flavors, Paulette is for you.
Raspberry and Caramel are musts.
Coffee if you like coffee.
Definitely(!) Earl Grey if you like Earl Grey.
I prefer the Earl Grey macaron from Bottega Louie.
Paulette had about a dozen flavors to choose from; I bought all 6 that Louie offered.
only a dozen flavors? i was under the impression they had something like 20 at any given time... i'm curious where my work gets their macarons of if they make it in house with the pastry chef. going to ask the executive chef!
There might have been more than a dozen though I think the flagship store would probably have more flavors on hand. The Little Tokyo outlet is very small and there isn't much foot traffic on a weekday.
Flavors to try next time: passionfruit, vanilla, almond wedding, pistachio, pineapple coconut...
yea, passionfruit, almond wedding and pineapple coconut sound like flavors i'd love and be willing to shell out $1.60 each! p.s. have you ever ate at king's hawaiian?
I've never eaten at King's, but coworkers used to pick up for me on the way to the office. I like it! A lot of our office birthday cakes come from the bakery.
