I had a meeting with a nutritionist last Friday. I was worried she'd tell me that nachos and Costco pizza are out. No such thing. She had a tricky way of not bumming me out.
"There should be no food that's off limits."*
She gave me a narrow window of sodium intake to aim for and sent me on my merry way with nutritional charts, a poster, flyers, and her email address (for nutritional anxiety meltdowns?). I stuck them in a backpack and didn't look at them until well after a BBQ chicken pizza slice and a large Diet Coke (I got tricked into an upsize) at the Oom Mow Mow at Disney California Adventure later that same day.
Well, apparently I can't have a Costco slice ever again since the nutritional values across the board are way off for what my targets are; not even as an occasional treat. I realized what Nutritionist meant. I can have pizza, just not ones I actually like. I should have known--she seemed utterly clueless about what a Costco portion size is. She probably wants me to make vegetarian mini-pizzas on English muffins. And, you know...that's fine. That's what it's about I guess. Learning how to eat properly in your 30s so you don't drop dead at 40 from heart disease. I'd been wanting to move in this direction anyway after reading some Michael Pollan earlier this year. Now that I've met Nutritionist, I have a better sense of how to clean up my act.
Oh, by the way...Until further notice, I'm off alcohol. (Not that I've been much of a drinker lately anyhow.) Self-imposed since the fainting episode. Easy peasy.
Best,
Inland Empirical
* She later forbade me from eating a particular food. "The only thing I don't want you to eat....Never order this again!..caesar salads."
