Pomona!

Empirical fans will recognize my cohort. We decided to do lunch out here in the Empire over the weekend.

Jesus Quintana t-shirt. Hanging out by the Fox Theater. If you look closely, you'll see the marquee's got tonight's Gogol Bordello show right at the top.

Joey's has been on Garey/2nd as far back as I can remember and thought it was a good sign it's been in operation all these years. Pulled pork sandwich, side of beans, side of slaw, dill spear, orange slice, and a regional Pomona Queen. His lunch was essentially the same except he had the sliced bbq beef sandwich. Had better/worse but this is definitely passable. We both agreed that nothing could ever touch the pulled pork sandwiches we had in Memphis which might be the best in the world. With that in mind it almost seems dumb to even try.

We enjoy cold ones. This Hoegaarden was as big as my head.

He spotted the poster advertising 2fer chicken tacos and I mentioned that Juan Pollo (founded by a Japanese American!) is one of the Inland Empire's own chains. It became a must even after the beers and barbecue. This downtown Pomona location is the only one I've ever been to and this was all about nostalgia for me. For him, getting 6 tacos at $0.75 a piece was important. I had a couple. We gave one to a meth addict--one of two that kept bugging us for dollars. I took a bean and cheese burrito home--that was better. I remembered after the fact that I like the sides better than the chicken itself. Super fresh rotissserie chicken--I think I just don't appreciate chicken the way other people do.

I love Pomona!
