Yes, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. On the off chance that you have no sweetie and/or plans for the evening, head on over to Future Studio Gallery for an art show. The artist featured is Betty Wan Hamada.
Betty does "found-object assemblages, re-functioned constructions, recycled/appropriated visual media collages and sculpture/installations." I'll be honest, I've not seen much of her work, but it could be interesting. I saw a few notices of the show around dtla but it really comes to my attention via the 6 degrees of separation...Betty is married to the guy who's the cousin of the wife of my cousin. Or something like that. I don't know the artist.
Also, the gallery is also known as the "Home of Chicken Boy" which is a project that this Japanese American woman--I'm pretty sure her name is Amy--runs. Again, it's a case of not knowing her personally, but she's been on the scene for years. I'd read about her in a million blurbs here and there about many different things. One of which is this quest to save Chicken Boy "The Statue of Liberty in Los Angeles." I've even read interviews she's done for the Times, odd books, magazines, etc.
As I said, might be worth checking out if you've got some free time 7-10 p.m. You should probably call to confirm before heading out--especially if you plan to make the trek from the Empire.
