Originally I wanted to do this as a proper poll with radio buttons and percentages and whatnot. I ditched that idea thinking some of you might want to give extended answers or add some commentary or whatever. I'm doing it this way despite the fact that IE Readers are overwhelmingly non-commenters(!). Please, if you will, answer in the comments area of this post and be as descriptive as you like.
If you can only visit one of the following cities, which one?
* Austin, TX
* New Orleans, LA
* Nashville, TN
EDIT: If possible, PLEASE provide reasons. Pros? Cons?

Hard to choose. New Orleans! Austin is a very close second.
New Orleans is a fun place with a lot of culture. Fairly touristy, but if you're only gonna be there a day or two you'll have a good time. Unless you're in time for SXSW, I don't think Austin would be nearly as fun.
New Orleans of course!!!!
I've been to Austin....It's cool and fun. I've been to TN, but never Nashville. I've always wanted to go to Graceland. New Orleans would be fun too and there are lots of beignets there. And bananas fosters. Even though I don't like bananas, I like flaming food.
I would choose Austin, since that is the only place on the list I haven't been to, and I've heard good things about it -- nice big river, good indy music scene, etc.
I remember New Orleans for its coffee with chicory and of course its beignets, also wonderful architecture; Nashville has a gigantic statue of Athena copied from the Parthenon, and people are extremely nice there.
It's a close race between New Orleans and Austin. Since only one can be picked, I'll say New Orleans. I've been wanting to visit there for like 20 years, versus Austin for like 5 years; may as well travel to the city I've desired the longest first... Thank goodness Chicago isn't a choice or else it would be an even harder decision.
She won't comment on Empirical, so I'll post it for her...
Meg: my advice is new orleans cause what good ever came out of texas?
Discuss?
I picked New Orleans because Madmojo had such a splendid time there before.
I'd go because the city needs tourist bucks more than the other places. The food scene is supposed to be awesome. The jazz as well. The history there gives me shivers. Graveyards! Plus. Public drunkenness!
Austin comes next because it seems like a great place to live. A little pool of blue in a great big sea of red. If its good enough fro Robert Rodriguez and his young strumpet wife, it's good enough for the rest of us.
So far New Orleans is taking the lead on this one. Nashville's been blown out of the competition.
I'm convinced food would be great in either Austin or Louisiana. Good call on the beignets, senorcrane & blue lass. I'm surprised no one made a case for Austin's BBQ.
citizenrobot makes an excellent point about New Orleans needing tourist money.
Additional commenting welcome. Let's keep this one going.
P.S. Not a single reference to Easy Rider? You disappoint me, readers!
IF I remember correctly they didn't have that great of a time in New Orleans. They were tripping out bad and having flashbacks in the cemetery and Peter Fonda was like MOMMM NOOOOOO because his mother committed suicide. There, now this comment is completely off topic!
Brothels.
Tripping balls.
Parading around.
Karen Black.
Toni Basil.
Pros and cons, everyone.
How do you really feel about these places.
yes, food should play the biggest role in your decision.
I'm trying to remember what I ate in Austin, but it was a very cool city. definitely the hippest I've been to in Texas
So, are you planning a trip? Or is this just an intellectual exercise?
If you do end up in N.O. -- and it seems to be winning, at least among the twenty-something set -- be street-smart, okay? It was wildly dangerous even *before* Katrina.
@blue lass: Planning a trip and an intellectual exercise.
Nothing really solid planned yet; we are still very much in the ideas-phase. Details will appear in future posts on Empirical as they become available.
I will confirm right now, the trip itself is happening.
Flaming food Vs. Elvis....It's hard to pick. Who needs an indie rock scene and some cafes when you can have peanut butter and banana sandwiches.
They say the world is divided into two groups of people. Elvis people and Beatles people. I'm an Elvis person.
Although, that being said, I don't like bananas...And I'm sure I'd hate peanut butter and bananas.
This $hit is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s
You can get a FRIED peanut butter and banana sandwich at the L.A. County Fair, Daddy-O.
