I've been fortunate to become friends with artists and have friends who are artistic—same thing?
Here are some works from 2 of them.
Jessie Johnson, creator of Peejoe comics. Issue 1 (seen on the left) was compiled in 2009 (regrettably never properly reviewed here on the Empirical) as a giveaway at that year's WonderCon. What a steal. I thought it was an impressive debut. I really enjoy honest autobiographical writing (as opposed to superheroes, always have been) and this is certainly that. The 1st issue covers among other things, a session with a masseuse, the origins of a long term foot ailment, a roadtrip taken with his partner all the while giving us a peek at his unique sense of humor. Sign me up! I'm a lifelong fan.
Issue 2 went out earlier this year, standard comic size, full color cover. A nice followup (though I'm still partial to #1), this one has another vacation with the boyfriend, more of that peculiar sense of humor that I love so much, an illustrated list of "Shit That Makes Me GRUMPY," but the real highlight was an account of a Thanksgiving weekend spent with his mother. The amount of emotion Jessie packs into a single panel is amazing.
Contact Jessie Johnson directly to purchase.
Issue 2 is $4 postpaid
Issue 1 is in its 2nd printing on PINK(!) paper and is $3 postpaid
Kiyoshi Nakazawa, paint, comics, screenprinting... He does it all. Drunken Master Issue 12 just dropped at this year's Comic-Con. A zine packed with comics. This time around it's a group effort dubbed "Lucky Nakazawa Top Team." Includes work from Plex Lowery and Matthew Digges and others. Good stuff but ultimately leaves me wanting more from the man himself. Can't hate though because Kiyoshi delivers art like THIS in #12. AND an exclusive interview with MMA fighter Josh Barnett!
Also new on the merch table is this sweet t-shirt. Check the pink gradient screenprinting. Wore mine yesterday to work... This is business casual, right? Actually the printing is on the back, so from the front it just looks like a dark colored shirt. With a cardi, your badassery is kept secret from coworkers. I also carried a switchblade comb in my messenger just to be safe. Even if you weren't a member of the "Round Table" it's okay to wear the shirt.
I suggest you snap up the Drunken Master back issues if/when they become available to you. Particularly DM Issue 6 which is a personal favorite of mine, featuring interviews with TSOL and Built to Spill.
Ordering Kiyoshi's merch can be done on his Etsy storefront.
