Sonoma Safari.

Empirical readers that keep up with my Flickr account may have noticed quite a few wild animal shots mixed in with wine country. No mistake. There is a Safari experience up there in the hills.

Before my first trip to Sonoma some years back, I Googled some travel ideas to see what else the wine country had to offer. I was really surprised to see something called Safari West pop up in my search results. It's a 400 acre preserve right in Santa Rosa that is home to a lot of African animals. Tickets were expensive so I never went.

This time I did though. It was a surprise by my hosts to take me up. There's some kind of locals' special that happens monthly(?). If you're a Santa Rosa resident, you can take an abbreviated safari by tram for about $20. You still see rhinos, cheetahs, a variety of birds in the aviary, pygmy antelope, giraffes, African cows, a zebra. If you're feeling really adventurous, stay at the park. You can reserve a tent for extended stays. Might be pricey, but try sniffing out a deal in the off season.

If interested, check it out here.
